Each year in May and July, the Moosehead Lake region holds a month-long
festival which they call MooseMainea. The timing is chosen such that
the moose are just starting to decent from the mountains down into
the valleys for the summer, where they will be easier for tourists
to spot. Besides the moose, MooseMainea features all sorts of evens
like a bicycle race (the Tour de Moose), arts and crafts, a photo
contest (I haven't entered any of mine), etc.
The best time to see a moose along the side of the road is near dawn or dusk. Last year at MooseMainea I saw seven moose in the three hours before dusk. This year we mostly struck out in the evening, but the following morning (which begins at 4am in Maine in the summer!) we saw fifteen of them!
